LAS VEGAS ? For now at least, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign seems to mostly be going according to plan. A commanding Nevada victory Saturday night underscored as much.
"You have given me your vote of confidence. And this time, I'm going take it all the way to the White House," an upbeat Romney told a raucous crowd gathered at the Red Rock Resort a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip. He ignored his GOP rivals and instead attacked President Barack Obama, insisting the president doesn't deserve credit for the recent drop in the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent.
"Mr. President, we welcome any good news on the jobs front, but it is thanks to the innovation of the American people in the private sector, and not to you," Romney said in Nevada.
Before the Nevada triumph, the former Massachusetts governor had turned in a strong performance in Iowa and won New Hampshire before suffering a serious setback in South Carolina. He recalibrated and went on to win decisively in Florida. Next up are Colorado, where Romney is expected to perform strongly, and Minnesota, which even advisers acknowledge could emerge as a stumbling block.
Romney still has plenty of challenges as he looks to clinch the nomination.
He's shown a tendency to make comments that provide fodder to his critics, saying recently he was "not concerned" about the very poor. The remark prompted backlash among some Republicans worried he would make similar mistakes while running against Obama. Romney's also still working to prove that he can unite skeptical conservatives behind him ? even though entrance polls in Nevada showed he performed strongly.

He won the state in 2008, too, and many observers have assumed he could easily win again. But Romney aides say Minnesota is unpredictable for many reasons. It's a small electorate with a strong evangelical contingent ? and the caucus system itself can make the outcomes harder to determine in advance.
In a sign that his team may be considering bypassing the state altogether, Romney on Saturday abruptly canceled plans to headline a rally early Monday in Minneapolis. He decided to head straight to Colorado and leave the Minneapolis event to two of his top surrogates ? former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Ambassador John Bolton, one of his most conservative backers. Romney doesn't currently plan to visit before Tuesday's voting.
Minnesota's Republican activists are strongly conservative, which could pose problems for Romney as candidates considered more conservative than him ? Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum ? work to impede the former Massachusetts governor's march to the nomination. Even the libertarian-leaning Ron Paul may end up a player in the Minnesota caucuses.
The political mood in Minnesota has soured of late, with a vitriolic struggle that shut down the state government last year. The sizable evangelical community is concerned about social issues. And a win for one of Romney's competitors could fuel concern that the GOP front-runner still hasn't been able to win over conservatives in his party ? or shake the narrative that he is already the presumptive GOP nominee.
Romney himself has sounded increasingly confident in recent days, calling himself the only candidate in the race who can beat Obama. And when his wife, Ann, introduced him at his Nevada victory speech, she cast the win as one not for February but for November.
"Mitt has started to win in states that are very important for the general election," she said, mentioning wins in New Hampshire and Florida. "This state is going to be an important state in the general. ... We're going to need you again next November."

Feds: Mid-Atlantic wind farms take step forward (AP)
BALTIMORE ? The view off the mid-Atlantic shore in the next decade could include giant wind turbines generating electricity for homes in several states if federal efforts to speed approval for the projects shave years off the process as officials intend.
It usually takes at least five years from the time contractors say they want to lease a site to the turbines being installed, an offshore wind developer official said. But still, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Thursday that the future of the renewable energy source took a big step forward with the completion of a review that showed no major environmental damage was expected from the installation along the coasts of Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey.
Salazar said that clears the way for auctions and leases later this year and his department was also streamlining the process for issuing renewable energy leases. The federal decision means a lengthier environmental impact assessment for offshore power along the mid-Atlantic won't have to be conducted, although reviews for individual projects will still have to be done.
Jim Lanard, president of the OffShore Wind Development Coalition, said that decision could shave two years off the review process.
The announcement will speed the building of offshore turbines by a year or more, said Michele Siekerka, the Assistant Commissioner of Economic Growth and Green Energy in New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection.
Eleven developers have submitted proposals totaling 12,000 megawatts and are expected to be able to bid later this year for leases. The companies will still have to do environmental studies of their own areas, but could be producing power by 2016 or 2017, she said.
"The key is the federal government is not doing another one," Siekerka said.
The mid-Atlantic lease proposal follows the Cape Wind project in Massachusetts that was given the go-ahead in 2010 after years of federal review. That project is still in development and Salazar said the department had learned from that experience.
"No developer should have to wait nine or 10 years," for approval, Salazar said.
Lanard said legislation pending in the Maryland General Assembly could do a lot to entice developers.
Lawmakers killed a bill last year that would have required utilities to enter into long-term power purchase contracts and Gov. Martin O'Malley said it wasn't clear how a toned-down bill would fare this year.
Eight companies have already expressed interest in Maryland sites, Lanard said.
"You'll really know the level of interest in Maryland when the leases are bid," Lanard said, adding his group was expecting to "see a lot of European developers that have 20 years of experience with offshore wind in Europe coming over and saying ? `We're ready to compete' ? if there's a revenue stream and the legislation passes."
Dominion Virginia Power said that it is interested in building up to 400 wind turbines in waters about 20 miles off Virginia Beach, but the cost of the power was an issue. The 2,000 megawatts the turbines could produce would generate enough power for 500,000 households.
"If everything aligns and it makes good sense and we have our regulators on board, yes, we would be moving forward on a wind farm," senior vice president Mary Doswell said.
The Interior Department said before the waters would be opened, the public would have a chance to comment on the projects.
O'Malley, who appeared at the announcement with Salazar, said his administration had contacted Defense Department officials to discuss the possibility of the military using offshore wind energy.
O'Malley, a Democrat, and Salazar both described the decision as a major step forward for offshore wind, and environmentalists agreed.
Environment America Clean Energy Advocate Courtney Abrams said "tapping into the power of offshore wind along the Atlantic coast is vital to getting the region and the nation off fossil fuels without creating more pollution."
Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., said the decision "just makes sense."
"It is a reliable, clean energy resource that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, curb harmful air pollutants, and create good paying American jobs in manufacturing and construction," Carper said.
Kit Kennedy, Clean Energy Counsel at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said offshore power holds the promise of clean energy that could also provide jobs, but it would watch the process carefully to make sure the environment is protected.
Dominion's Doswell said absent tax credits, power generated by towering wind turbines costs about 28 cents per kilowatt hour, while the state's largest electric utility's rates are now in the range of 11 to 12 cents per kilowatt hour.
"So that's what we're battling," Doswell said. "Wind is a great resource and you can do it with scale, but we've got to work on this cost equation."

South Carolina women beat No. 8 Tennessee 64-60
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? South Carolina honored Tennessee coach Pat Summitt pre-game with a $20,000 donation for Alzheimer's research. The Gamecocks' goodwill ended there.
With a career-high 27 points from Markeshia Grant and strong performances from the rest of the team's guards, South Carolina beat No. 8 Tennessee 64-60 on Thursday night for its first win over the Lady Volunteers since 1980.
"I'm just glad our players got a chance to experience this experience, knowing the tradition of Tennessee," South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said. "By far, this is the biggest win of my career."
The Gamecocks (18-5, 7-3 Southeastern Conference) were down 60-55, when Ashley Bruner hit a layup with 3:18 to play. The basket launched a 9-0 South Carolina run to close out the game, and Ieasia Walker hit the go-ahead layup with 2:15 to play.
The Lady Vols had led 57-50 with 5:02 to play in the back-and-forth game, but a layup by Walker and a 3-pointer by Grant, one of seven by the senior, fired up the Gamecocks bench. Tennessee remained flat the rest of the way and missed five shots during South Carolina's game-ending run.
In the final three minutes, the Gamecocks forced a turnover by point guard Ariel Massengale and tied the ball up twice. South Carolina gained possession on the second jumpball, preventing Tennessee a chance at a game-tying shot with 47 seconds left to play.
Tennessee outshot South Carolina 41.4 percent to 39.4 percent and held a 44-36 advantage in rebounding but had little answer for the Gamecocks guards. La'Keisha Sutton added 12 points, and Walker had 11.
"We didn't have an answer for them the last four minutes of the game. We didn't have an answer for their runs," Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick said. "We continue to let star players put up big numbers against us, and that's been a focal point for us, but obviously it hasn't been good enough."
Glory Johnson scored 13 points in 26 minutes for Tennessee (16-6, 7-2), but foul trouble kept her from being the force in the paint the Lady Vols have come to rely on. Ariel Massengale scored 12 points, and Shekinna Stricklen grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Lady Vols hadn't dropped a SEC game at home since a loss to LSU on Feb. 14, 2008, but have struggled in the first season since coach Pat Summitt announced she'd been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.
"We have the fan support. We have home-court advantage. We're sleeping in our own beds before the game. We're having a great pregame meal. We're completely prepared with the scouting report from our coaches, so this loss is on us. There are no excuses," Johnson said.
It was the first victory for South Carolina in Knoxville and the Gamecocks' first win against Tennessee since a 56-52 victory on Jan. 23, 1980, when Warlick was a point guard for Tennessee. The Lady Vols had won 40 straight meetings since then.
It was the second longest active winning streak by one opponent over another. Stanford has beaten Washington State 52 straight times.
South Carolina has been laying the foundation for one of its strongest seasons ever. It now owns the program's best record since the 2001-02 season which saw the Gamecocks finish 20-3 and reach the NCAA regional finals.
The Gamecocks have managed the feat with the same kind of sharp focus on defense that has been the hallmark of so many Summitt-coached teams. They entered the game ranked second in the nation in limiting opponents to 47.5 points per game and top in the nation with 20.1 3-point shooting defense.
That defense frustrated the Lady Vols all over the floor. They struggled to get second-chance points, hit just one 3-pointer and turned the ball over 11 times.
The Gamecocks' last win over a top 10 team came in a 71-52 decision over then-No. 6 Vanderbilt on Jan. 3, 2002, in Columbia. The highest ranked team the Gamecocks have defeated in Staley's four seasons was then-No. 14 Georgia on Feb. 25, 2010, when South Carolina left Athens with a 52-42 victory.
"I really can't put it into words because I don't think it has hit me yet," Sutton said. "I'm really happy for our team, coach Staley, our coaching staff for preparing us and just every player who ever put on a Gamecock uniform."
During the team shootaround on Thursday, Staley, South Carolina assistant coach and former Lady Vol Nikki McCray and the rest of the Gamecocks presented to Summitt's son Tyler a $20,000 check to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of the Hall of Fame coach.
Soon after that, Staley's own college coach, former Virginia coach Debbie Ryan, spoke to the Gamecocks about believing in themselves. With Staley as her point guard, Ryan's Cavaliers beat Summitt's Lady Vols in the 1990 NCAA regional finals.
''We had my college coach Debbie Ryan come talk to our team about everyone believing on one accord and being on one accord and anything is possible," Staley said. "I think our team took that to heart."
