Britain's Hague says Myanmar needs more reforms (AP)

YANGON, Myanmar ? Britain's foreign secretary says Myanmar's recent reforms are cause for hope but are not yet enough and that foreign supporters of democracy must not ease pressure on its military-backed government.

William Hague said Friday during the first visit to Myanmar by a British foreign secretary since 1955 that the reforms undertaken by elected President Thein Sein raise hopes that democracy is within reach in the Southeast Asian nation.

But he says critics need to keep up the pressure on Myanmar until those reforms are complete.

Britain and other nations instituted political and economic sanctions against Myanmar because of repression by the previous military regime.

Hague says these sanctions should not yet be lifted while political prisoners are still being held.
