I had a difficult time coming up with ideas for this blog so I asked a coworker for ideas. She suggested that I write about my awesome coworkers so I started thinking about all of the friendships/relationships I?ve made within Student Affairs.? First of all, I have amazing coworkers.? When I first started this position, I was very nervous about fitting in and making connections with the people around me.? I had just come from a position where I had strong relationships with my supervisor and colleagues.? I was worried that I wouldn?t have the same experience in this new position. However, I was pleasantly surprised.? The individuals I currently work with are so helpful and supportive.? On my first day, I was welcomed with open arms and was treated with respect. I was never treated like ?the new person?. From the beginning, I was a part of the team and given the same opportunities as the rest of my colleagues. ??I learn from them on a daily basis and they have become not only coworkers but friends.? I am so fortune and thankful for the people around me.? I hope all of the lovely readers have similar experiences with your coworkers- if not, I hope that changes in the future!
Some of my coworkers and I have shared laughter and fun outside of work as well. This has helped us bond and develop friendships. ?Some of the people I work with tried to teach others how to crochet (and it is harder than it looks).? Although I was unsuccessful, it had turned into a hobby for others. It was fun spending time with people outside of work and learning something crafty.? We have designated ?girls? nights? and hope to continue these in the months ahead. ?Whether it is trying new restaurants, going to sporting events (even if they are rooting for the other team), or having a spa day spending time with coworkers/friends is fabulous.? ?
Not only am I appreciative for the people in my current job, but I am also grateful for the people I have worked with in the past.? My former coworkers in the Financial Aid Office at Ball State University and my cohort in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education (SAAHE) are people that I have built long lasting friendships and connections.? I think within the world of Student Affairs, you build these connections that transcend time.? You know that you can turn to a colleague that you have lost connection with and feel confident he or she will remember you and provide you with guidance or support.? That is just how we operate- we are folks who love to help others.? With NASPA quickly approaching (14 days? ) I am so excited to make new connections and catch up with others who have been off of my radar.? I like to think of NASPA as a big family reunion- we can have fun but still share knowledge and appreciation of the field together.?
