Student Affairs - the First Years: Why Can't We Be Friends ?

I had a difficult time coming up with ideas for this blog so I asked a coworker for ideas. She suggested that I write about my awesome coworkers so I started thinking about all of the friendships/relationships I?ve made within Student Affairs.? First of all, I have amazing coworkers.? When I first started this position, I was very nervous about fitting in and making connections with the people around me.? I had just come from a position where I had strong relationships with my supervisor and colleagues.? I was worried that I wouldn?t have the same experience in this new position. However, I was pleasantly surprised.? The individuals I currently work with are so helpful and supportive.? On my first day, I was welcomed with open arms and was treated with respect. I was never treated like ?the new person?. From the beginning, I was a part of the team and given the same opportunities as the rest of my colleagues. ??I learn from them on a daily basis and they have become not only coworkers but friends.? I am so fortune and thankful for the people around me.? I hope all of the lovely readers have similar experiences with your coworkers- if not, I hope that changes in the future!

Some of my coworkers and I have shared laughter and fun outside of work as well. This has helped us bond and develop friendships. ?Some of the people I work with tried to teach others how to crochet (and it is harder than it looks).? Although I was unsuccessful, it had turned into a hobby for others. It was fun spending time with people outside of work and learning something crafty.? We have designated ?girls? nights? and hope to continue these in the months ahead. ?Whether it is trying new restaurants, going to sporting events (even if they are rooting for the other team), or having a spa day spending time with coworkers/friends is fabulous.? ?

Not only am I appreciative for the people in my current job, but I am also grateful for the people I have worked with in the past.? My former coworkers in the Financial Aid Office at Ball State University and my cohort in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education (SAAHE) are people that I have built long lasting friendships and connections.? I think within the world of Student Affairs, you build these connections that transcend time.? You know that you can turn to a colleague that you have lost connection with and feel confident he or she will remember you and provide you with guidance or support.? That is just how we operate- we are folks who love to help others.? With NASPA quickly approaching (14 days? ) I am so excited to make new connections and catch up with others who have been off of my radar.? I like to think of NASPA as a big family reunion- we can have fun but still share knowledge and appreciation of the field together.? UNT will be opening its own autism center in the fall semester to allow students, families and Denton residents to receive care and service for their specific autism spectrum disorder needs.

The center, set to open Sept. 1, will serve all age groups and will provide students with services such as diagnostic testing and evaluation, special education for elementary students, applied behavior analysis and behavioral therapy and family counseling, along with several others. The facility will be located near Outback Steakhouse on Interstate 35.

UNT Autism Center Director Dr. Kevin Callahan and his staff have been working since 1995 to open a facility where students, children and people of all ages could receive education, therapy and training.

?This facility will provide three pillars of services for our individuals: research, training for UNT students who are acquiring an education or psychology degree and specific services for not only local individuals with autism but also international students as well,? Callahan said. ?We also have partners in Europe that need training in autism, which will be able to come to this center and receive that as well.?

Dr. Carol Hagen, director of UNT?s Child Development Laboratory, is readily anticipating the opening.

?All of us in the College of Education are excited about the new Autism Center and the educational services it will bring to our students and the children it will serve,? Hagen said.

Callahan is in the process of hiring a staff of 20 highly trained and experienced professionals. The center will be open to any individuals with needs, and Callahan is hopeful that scholarships will be available for those who are unable to afford the fees.

?I believe UNT finally accommodating individuals with specific educational needs is a fantastic idea,? education junior Ren Heitman said. ?It?ll open so many doors for us.?

A donation from UNT alumna Kristin Farmer and her organization Autism Comprehensive Educational Services (ACES) helped the center become reality.

?This has been a long time coming,? Callahan said. ?It?s kind of like a dream come true for me.?

Sometimes, the party is hosted at the mother?s place. This can be convenient as well because the mother doesn?t have to go anywhere. Friends of the mother can help with the clean up afterwards.

For larger baby showers, banquet halls or other locations can be rented. Other places include parks, restaurants, catered dining rooms, or anywhere else that might be appropriate. It is okay to plan things differently as long as the mother and everyone else has a good time.

Most baby showers occur several weeks before the baby is due. Sometimes showers occur after the baby is born, which allows the guest to see the new baby. When to have the baby shower is entirely based on the preferences of the host and the mother.

The food at the party does not necessarily have to be baby-themed, although that can be a nice touch. The most common baby-themed food is baby shower diaper cake. Your local bakery can also make other items like cookies and pastries in the shape of baby blocks, pacifiers, rubber ducks, and other baby items. Or you can make them yourself. Most importantly, make sure to pick food that everyone will enjoy.

If you are hiring a caterer, then be sure to ask them about their ideas and experiences with baby showers. They may have some creative ideas that you may not have thought about.

6) Decorations and party favors.

Your local party supply store will probably have plenty of decorations for your baby shower. Specifically themed decorations can also be purchased online.

Buying party favors for your guests is always a nice way to say thank you for coming. These gifts for your guests can range from themed candies to more expensive keepsakes, including personalized items. Special prizes can also be given out for game winners or other people who have been important in the mother?s life and during the pregnancy.

7) During the party.

Greet the guests when they arrive and have others help out if necessary to make sure everything runs smoothly. And finally, don?t forget to have fun after all the planning and preparation.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Maybe this should be the Joe Maddon Rule.

A season after the Tampa Bay manager put outfielder Sam Fuld to the mound to warm up for the sole purpose of giving a reliever extra time in the bullpen, Major League Baseball closed the loophole.

MLB has amended Official Baseball Rule 3.05 regarding such shenanigans. The change will "prohibit a manager from sending his current pitcher out to warm up with no intention of having him pitch because a relief pitcher is not ready to enter the game."

The Playing Rules Committee proposed the tweak in the offseason and it was approved by MLB, the players' union and umpires.

Maddon hadn't heard about the change until being asked this week.

"I know this, that all the odd kind of moments that occur during the season regarding umpiring, that they do write them down, and they'll talk about it at the end of the season. So, it doesn't surprise me. And it also indicates that they're on top of things, so I kind of like it," he said at the Rays' spring training camp.

"That was an anomaly. That'll probably never come up again," he added. "The other thing with Sammy. That was just something that we pulled out of our hat, just to try to make sure that we got everybody warmed up and ready to go."

The Rays were playing at Milwaukee last June when the episode occurred. Fuld pinch-hit for reliever J.P. Howell in the top of the eighth inning and Tampa Bay scored three runs to take an 8-1 lead.

Maddon had planned on using reliever Joel Peralta while the game was close. Once the Rays pulled away, Maddon wanted Cesar Ramos to pitch in the bottom half.

But because Ramos wasn't ready, Maddon sent Fuld ? who batted in the pitcher's spot but has not actually pitched since high school ? to the mound to warm up. Once Fuld was done, Maddon brought in Ramos.

The next day, after the Rays won 8-4, Maddon admitted he'd fudged things and apologized to the umpiring crew.

The rules committee, composed of executives, former players and an umpire, recently made a few other adjustments, none major.

Bats with a scooped end on the barrel can have an indentation of 1? inches, up from 1 inch. And the word "baseline" has been replaced in spots by "base path."

Also, the process for appealing an official scorer's ruling has been changed. In the past, a team's public relations employee would often ask the scorer to review a call. Now, a player's agent will work with the union to appeal, then there will be a process between MLB and the union to reach a decision.

Maddon, meanwhile, still had some questions about the reliever rule.

"How do they know the intentions are not to pitch him? How would you know that? You could easily leave him in there for one hitter if you had to," he said.

"My concern would be you could still send out your previous inning's pitcher to warm up and then pull him out of the game before the first batter. That's still OK, correct?"

Maddon was more certain on what to call the new 3.05 rule ? as in, don't name it for him.

"Oh! Stay with the number," he said, laughing. "No, make it the Sam Fuld Rule. I'm good with that."

FDA: New suppliers to ease 2 cancer drug shortages

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Federal regulators say they've approved new suppliers for two crucial cancer drugs, easing critical shortages ? at least for the time being ? that have patients worried about missing life-saving treatments.

The Food and Drug Administration will temporarily allow importation of a replacement drug for Doxil, a drug for ovarian and other cancers that hasn't been available for new patients for months.

The agency also has approved another supplier for a preservative-free version of methotrexate (METH-oh-TRECKS-ayt), a crucial drug for children with a type of leukemia and for high-dose treatment of bone cancer.

The FDA increasingly has been able to prevent drug shortages by getting advance notice from manufacturers, but about 280 drugs currently are in short supply.
