wise self improvement | self improvement made easy: Leaders Must ...

If you want to serve as a leader, then actually act like one, and be a leader. That means a leader must step forward while others stand on the sideline. Judge someone as a leader not by what they do regarding popular programs and ideas. Rather they must be judged by whether or not they stand up for what they believe, and take what are often difficult or challenging positions. Certainly it is challenging and even stressful at times to stand alone on principle, if you really believe in something. Leadership is about inner strength and fortitude, and doing and saying what needs to be do e, even if it may at times be unpopular or out of fashion.

1. I recall serving for nearly a decade, many years ago, as the Treasurer of a non profit. it seemed obvious to me that this particular organization, if it did not take steps to address putting their financial house in order, would soon be facing the prospect of insolvency. Although I was often overwhelmingly opposed, I continued to chastise, coerce, and demand that the Board acted responsibly. Years later, almost every one of my proposals was enacted, and although waiting as long as they did had a negative overall compacted fiscal and financial impact, the fact that they eventually did what was needed guaranteed the road to solvency and relevance. The interesting aspect, however, is that the very same people who openly bad mouthed me, and derided my point of view, eventually championed the battle, and were more than glad to take full credit for the accomplishment. However, the important thing is not who got the credit, but that what needed to get done, did.

2. Leadership must never be about one's ego or popularity. Rather, it is about webbing effectively, and bringing an organization to achieve and perform to its potential, and to accomplish worthwhile missions. Great leaders always begin with a vital vision, and that vision always acts to motivate them to commit to a greater extent, try harder, care more, and make more efforts to include others in the quest. The true mark of a great leader is not only getting followers to care, but developing the ones with the most potential, to become future true leaders.

It all begins with a leader's adherence to a basic principle or tenet, and using that to bring himself to bravely take a stand, when others resist. All organizations benefit from great leadership.

The Lava Lamp Workspace

The Lava Lamp WorkspaceA great workspace is rarely more than good, clean organization and a few personal touches. Such is the case with Ryan Nicholson's perfectly tidy desk that finds its personality in wall-mounted records and a Mathmos "Astro" Lava Lamp. Those little touches give it a retro feel, but take the same workspace and choose a couple of other personal items and you'd have something entirely different. It goes to show that if you pick some simple furniture, you can let your own character dominate the aesthetic in the room.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, post them to #workspaceshowcase. Make sure any photos you include are at least 640x360. Keeping them to 16:9 helps, too! Include a little text about the stuff you used, how you came up with the design, and any other relevant details. If your clever organization and good design sense catches our eye, you might be the next featured workspace.

Kanex mySpot

The Kanex mySpot ($59.99 MSRP) is a tiny access point (AP) used to create a wireless network when you only have one wired Internet connection. MySpot is handy if, for example, you are in a hotel room or convention hall and only have access to one live Ethernet cable. Kanex specializes in devices for Apple, and keeping in line with the wants of many Apple fans, the company makes mySpot very easy to set up. In fact setup is much simpler than most other travel routers and access points?it's practically plug-and-play. But this device serves only as a wireless AP: It doesn't offer any router functionality.

This means you don't get DHCP capabilities or the ability to create a robust network in which clients can share data. The Kanex mySpot can only deliver Internet access to wireless clients in the situation where you only have one wired connection via an Ethernet cableMySpot also is limited in that it only supports WEP and 802.11 b/g. While it works as advertised, there are other travel routers on the market that deliver more functionality.

Specs
The pocket-sized mySpot looks like a chunky Pez candy dispenser. Its dimensions are 2.27 "x 1.0" x 0.75" (HDW). The device connects to a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a laptop or some other client. The USB plug tucks into a groove on the mySpot and is removed from that groove when plugging into a laptop, for instance. The other end of mySpot has a soft, removable cap which exposes an Ethernet port.

MySpot can only create a 2.4GHz WLAN that supports 802.11b/g. It also supports only WEP security, lacking the more secure WPA and WPA2. You can password-protect the WLAN you create with a 5 or 13 character ASCII password. Still, I would be hesitant to conduct any sensitive Internet business with this setup, such as online banking or shopping with credit cards.?

Because mySpot is an AP and has no routing functionality, it picks up the settings of the network of the wired Ethernet connection. So whatever IP addressing information that Ethernet cable's network has, will be passed onto any clients connected to the mySpot wirelessly. You have no control over IP addresses with the Kanex device.? Again, since the purpose is not to create a full-featured wireless LAN, that's suitable for those only looking to get their tablet and smart phone connected to the single Internet connection available in a hotel room.

Setup
To set up mySpot, I plugged the USB connector into a USB 2.0 port of a Dell laptop. I then plugged an Ethernet cable attached to DSL broadband into the MySpot's Ethernet port.

MySpot has two LEDs?one lights blue up when it detects a live Internet connection, and the other lights up red when it's connected to USB (I find it absolutely annoying when vendors use a red LED for a problem-free connection on networking products. Most network administrators are only used to seeing reds and oranges when there are connection issues!)

After I connected the mySpot, I had an unsecured SSID named Kanex MySpot-A5F. I connected to this network and was able to get into the mySpot's web-based interface. There isn't a lot to configure with this simple device. You can change the SSID from the default as well as create a password, or change the wireless channel. This is the extent of the settings. You can't even hide the SSID for extra protection against prying eyes. That's all there really is to setup.

I was easily able to connect two laptops to the mySpot WLAN using either a 5 character or 13 character password. I was able to connect an Android phone with no security, but once I set up either a 5 or 13 character password enabling WEP, I could not connect my phone. This is a potentially major problem with the mySpot. Not all devices can connect with WEP encryption. Once I removed the password (removing the WEP encryption) I was able to connect my Android phone without issue. For Kanex to be of more value, it would need to have WPA2 encryption, which is supported by most popular wireless devices and gadgets.

Easy Setup is Best Feature
I really like how easy mySpot is to set up. Travel routers and APs can often be confusing to configure for the average user on the go. Unfortunately, a lack of modern-level wireless encryption and no support for 802.11N are major oversights with this device. Since it works as advertised, it gets 2.5 out of 5 stars. For a better option, check out our Editors' Choice travel Wi-Fi router?the ZuniConnect Travel Router, which supports 802.11 b/g/n, handles IP addressing intelligently, and supports WPA2.

Pediatricians say kids need recess during school

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A group of American pediatricians is telling school districts that children need recess and free time during the school day, and it should not even be taken away as punishment.

"We consider it essentially the child's personal time and don't feel it should be taken away for academic or punitive reasons," said Dr. Robert Murray, who co-authored the new policy statement for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The statement, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, says recess is a "crucial and necessary component of a child's development."

Recess helps students develop communication skills, such as cooperation and sharing, and helps counteract the time they spend sitting in class, according to the statement.

"The cognitive literature indicates that children are exactly as we are as adults. Whenever they're performing a complicated or complex task, they need time to process the information," said Murray, a professor at Ohio State University in Columbus.

"Kids have to have that time scheduled. They're not given the opportunity to just get up and walk around for a few minutes," he added.

Previous research, according to the statement's authors, found children pay closer attention and perform better mentally after recess.

Last January, a review of 14 studies found kids who get more exercise from - among other things - recess and playing on sports teams tend to do better in school (see Reuters Health story of January 3, 2012 here:.)

But a 2011 survey of 1,800 elementary schools found about a third were not offering recess to their third grade classes (see Reuters Health story of December 5, 2011 here:.)

Murray told Reuters Health that schools in Japan offer children about 10 minutes of free time after every 50 minutes of class, which he said makes sense.

"I think you can feel it if you go to a lecture that after 40 to 50 minutes of a concentrated activity you need to take a break," he said.

Currently, the American Heart Association calls for at least 20 minutes of recess every day, but Murray said recess needs depend on the child.

"Most schools - on average - are working on the framework of 15 to 30 minute bursts of recess once or twice a day," he said.

There is, however, consensus on when in the day children's recess should take place.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture both recommend schools schedule recess before lunch.

Previous studies have found that children waste less food and behave better for the rest of the day when their recess is before their scheduled lunch, the pediatricians' statement notes.

The statement also says schools should not substitute physical education classes for recess.

"Those are completely different things and they offer completely different outcomes," said Murray. "(Physical education teachers are) trying to teach motor skills and the ability of those children to use those skills in a bunch of different scenarios. Recess is a child's free time."

The pediatricians also warn against a recess that is too structured, such as having games led by adults.

"I think it becomes structured to the point where you lose some of those developmental and social emotion benefits of free play," said Murray.

"This is a very important and overlooked time of day for the child and we should not lose sight of the fact that it has very important benefits," he added.

Buzzed Buzzer helps you become even more annoying while drunk

Sure, we see plenty of specialized technology, day in and day out, but few of these modern movels target an often overlooked segment of the population: the incredibly drunk. Thankfully, Tyler DeAngelo, he of Fifth Avenue Frogger and Check 'N Chew, is on the case, teaming up Sacha De'Angeli to bring the world Buzzed Buzzer -- just in time for New Year's. The hack uses a standard New Year's party horn, a small micro controller and a breathalyzer alcohol sensor to create a party noise maker that only works when the user has imbibed a sufficient quantity of booze. There's a not particularly informative video after the break, but if you really want in on the action, consult the source link below for a full list of instructions, so you can be the loudest drunk at the party. And yeah, if the buzzer works for you, please refrain from blowing it at your designated driver.

How to Reduce Your Taxable Income | Entrepreneur Magazine

Save more by understanding where ? and how ? you pay taxes.

Many South African despise paying the vast amount of tax that we do. There seems to be tax on everything ? tax on our income, tax on things we buy, tax when we fill up with petrol, even tax when we pass away!

The individual?s marginal rates of tax in South Africa range between 0% and 40%. 40% may seem high, but we are far from having the highest marginal tax rate in the world. Aruba (a little island in the Caribbean) has a marginal tax rate of 59%, Sweden is at 56,6% and Denmark at 55,4% (just to name a few).

There are ways in South Africa to not pay tax. It can either be done using tax avoidance methods or tax evasion methods. Tax avoidance is the legal way a taxpayer can reduce the amount of tax that he/she owes. Tax evasion, however, is when a taxpayer illegally avoids paying tax and can get a taxpayer into serious trouble (ask Schabir Shaik or Nicholas Cage).

Some tax avoidance methods individuals can use to reduce their taxable income are highlighted below.

1)Retirement annuity contributions if you have non retirement funding income

Non retirement funding income can be defined as income that is not linked to a pension or provident fund. You are currently able to contribute a maximum of 15% of your non retirement funding income to a retirement annuity, all of which should be tax deductible.

So, for example, if you earn an income of R 800?000 per annum and do not have a pension or provident fund, you would be able to contribute R 10?000 per month into a retirement annuity-all of which should be tax deductible. As you are in the 40% tax bracket (with an income of R 800?000 per annum), you would be saving yourself approximately R 48?000 in tax per annum.

If you are on a company pension or provident fund, but have an alternative source of income (such as rental income from property), this rental income would be classified as non-retirement funding income and therefore a retirement annuity can be used to reduce your taxable income in this situation.

2)Income protection premiums

Capital disability pays you the benefit if you are totally and permanently disabled. For example, someone who is injured in a car accident and cannot work for a few months will not be able to claim capital disability as they will recover from their injuries.

However, income protection is designed to assist individuals to stay afloat should they become unable to work in their own or a similar occupation. It is a very important benefit that should be considered by individuals. The premiums for income protection are tax deductible.

3)Donating to Public Benefit Organisations

Tax payers are able to donate up to 10% of their taxable income to public benefit organisations and claim a tax deduction on this donation, as long as these public benefit organisations comply with section 18A of the Income Tax Act.

4)Medical aid contributions

Taxpayers under the age of 65 may deduct monthly contributions to medical schemes (a tax rebate to be known as a medical scheme fees tax credit) up to R 230 each for the taxpayer and the first dependant on the medical scheme and R 154 for each additional dependant.

Taxpayers can also claim a deduction for medical scheme contributions exceeding four times the amount of the medical scheme?s fees tax credits and any other medical expenses limited to the amount which exceeds 7.5% of taxable income. Don?t forget to keep receipts of all these transactions as you will need them when you submit your tax return!

Taxpayers who are 65 years and older, as well as any taxpayer where the taxpayer, the taxpayer?s spouse or child is a person with a disability, may claim all qualifying expenditure as a tax deduction.

As one can see from the above, careful planning can significantly reduce the amount of income tax you owe. Speak to a Certified Financial Planner ?, who should be able to assist you in reducing your taxable income in a legal and intelligent way.

Chennai:? Ahead of the scheduled ODI between India and Pakistan on December 30, the Madras High Court on Tuesday, directed state government authorities to allow the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to use three stands at the M A Chidambaram stadium here for public use during the match.

The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, directed the respondents to permit TNCA to use 'I', 'J' and 'K' stands for the use of public through sale of tickets for the match.

Holding that the present permission has been granted only on consideration of the peculiar circumstances and taking note of the importance of the event, the bench said, "This permission granted shall not be treated as a precedent for any future matches and shall be confined only to the match scheduled on December 30."

It was stated that the match was to be witnessed by thousands of cricket fans, several hundreds of visiting fans and 50 delegates from Pakistan, including the chairman of the PCB.

TNCA had prayed for an interim injunction restraining authorities from interfering with the use of I, J and K stands in the stadium for the match.

Corporation of Chennai had issued a notice to lock, seal and demolish the stands, alleging that the construction of these stands was unauthorised and had been carried out without planning permission under Town and Planning Act, 1971.

The bench also stayed the conditions imposed by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Chennai, not permitting the use of I, J and K stands until further orders.

However, the bench said the ACP shall be entitled to impose other conditions for regulating the parking of vehicles during the match, and the TNCA shall comply with all such conditions scrupulously.

The bench said TNCA shall indemnify the authorities from any damage or claims that may occur on account of the permission granted to them to use the three stands.

The bench posted the matter after six weeks.

What are the best investments for very little money? ? Roth IRA News

First, you no longer have a penalty (at least in Scottrade and similar types of brokerages) for buying less than a full block of stock. So you can buy as few shares of lots of things as your money will allow.

Recently I saw an opportunity for Baker Hughes Tool but only had enough free money for something like 85 shares. The commission was still $7. It was still enough to turn a profit, but if the opportunity arose when I had more free cash then the marginal value would have been better.

Say you had a thousand available (better still, $1,007) for one trade. Then you subtract the commission for a trade and divide the remainder by the expected available price of the stock you are interested in. I say ?expected? because if the price is rising and you buy it ?at market? then you may have to cough up some extra cash to cover if the price edges above your personal limit. Then you could place a limit order at your maximum number, but some other brokerages charge extra for anything other than market orders.

The Standard & Poors 500 list is a pretty broadly held list that people scrutinize often. They are listed for the comparatively safe prospects of market value growth. Not skyrockets by any stretch, but COMPARATIVELY solid firms. Here is a list of those that are under $10 per share: TLAB, DYN, Q, F, CPWR, CC, NOVL, LSI, UIS, JAVA, THC. Research them as best you can. Then if one interests you, buy some. By the way, Sharebuilder.com is good for buying with limited resources?but not speculative trading, there is difference. If you are investing and don?t know what you are doing, then this list will help. You can certainly do worse.

Tottenham climbs into top 4 of Premier League

LONDON (AP) -Tottenham climbed back into the top four in the Premier League on Sunday, breaking Swansea's stubborn resistance through Jan Vertonghen's late goal in a 1-0 win.

However, West Bromwich Albion missed a chance to move into the Champions League positions by drawing 0-0 at home to West Ham, extending the team's winless run to four games after its surprisingly strong start to the season.

Vertonghen, the Belgium captain, settled a tight match at White Hart Lane by meeting Kyle Walker's right-wing free kick with a low half-volley from just inside the area.

Tottenham is now level on points with third-place Chelsea, which has a game in hand. West Brom stayed sixth but the standings are congested below the top two Manchester clubs, with seven points separating third from 12th.

"For us, it's important to break out from the pack and join the top two," Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said.

"Until we find the stability in our run of results and distance ourselves from the pack, things can change dramatically."

The Tottenham-Swansea match ended in controversy, however, with members of both benches spilling onto the pitch after visiting striker Michu was left prone on the ground after landing heavily following an aerial challenge with Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Memories understandably drifted back to the on-field collapse of former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba on the same pitch last season, while the incident was eerily similar to that in the 1982 World Cup semifinal when France defender Patrick Battiston was knocked unconscious after colliding with Germany goalkeeper Harold Schumacher.

While Michu was spread-eagled, and being attended by a number of concerned players, play was allowed to continue by the match officials. That disgusted Swansea, particularly defender Chico Flores and manager Michael Laudrup, and sparked confrontations on the pitch.

"When I saw it I thought, `Oh hell, he is unconscious, you can't fake a reaction like that,"' Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said. "Still they let the game go on - it is such a poor decision and dangerous as well."

Spurs deserved their win, although they left it late after top scorer Jermain Defoe wasted a couple of good chances and his teammates failed to find any penetration in their build-up play.

When Vertonghen did give them the lead with his first Premier League goal since a summer move from Ajax, Spurs managed to hang on and avoid the concession of late goals that has blighted its campaign this season.

"I think if there was one team to win this game it was us," Villas-Boas said. "We were very patient and persistent in what we were doing."

At the Hawthorns, James Morrison struck efforts against the crossbar twice in the second half for West Brom, whose strong start to the season feels like a distant memory after the team extended its winless run.

"I think the way we've played, we should be kicking on," West Brom captain Chris Brunt said. "Hopefully that can push us on going into Christmas."

Mid-table West Ham will consider it a good point, with its opponent having won six of its previous eight matches at the Hawthorns this season.

HSBC to pay $1.9 billion in money-laundering case

19 hrs.

HSBC has agreed to pay a record $1.92 billion fine to settle a multi-year probe by U.S. prosecutors, who accused Europe's biggest bank of failing to enforce rules designed to prevent the laundering of criminal cash.

The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday charged the bank with failing to maintain an effective program against money laundering and conduct due diligence on certain accounts.

In documents filed in federal court in Brooklyn, it also charged the bank with violating sanctions laws by doing business with customers in Iran, Libya, Sudan, Burma and Cuba.

HSBC Holdings Plc admitted to a breakdown of controls and apologized for its conduct.

"We accept responsibility for our past mistakes. We have said we are profoundly sorry for them, and we do so again. The HSBC of today is a fundamentally different organization from the one that made those mistakes," said Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver.

In an agreement with the Justice Department, the bank will take steps to fix the problems, pay a fine of $1.256 billion, and retain a compliance monitor to resolve the charges through a deferred-prosecution agreement. Including penalties imposed by other agencies, the bank's fines total $1.92 billion. HSBC also faces civil penalties, to be announced later Tuesday.

The settlement offers new information about failures at HSBC to police transactions linked to Mexico, details of which were reported this summer in a sweeping U.S. Senate probe.

Between 2006 and 2010, HSBC ignored money-laundering risks associated with certain Mexican customers and allowed at least $881 million in drug trafficking proceeds, including proceeds from the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico and the Norte del Valle Cartel in Colombia, to be laundered through the bank, according to the Tuesday agreement.

Despite known risks of doing business in Mexico, the bank put Mexico in its lowest risk category, which excluded $670 billion in transactions from the monitoring systems.

"The HSBC settlement sends a powerful wakeup call to multinational banks about the consequences of disregarding their anti-money laundering obligations," said Senator Carl Levin, who led the Senate inquiry.

HSBC said it expected to also reach a settlement with British watchdog the Financial Services Authority. The FSA declined to comment.

U.S. and European banks have now agreed to settlements with U.S. regulators total ling some $5 billion in recent years on charges they violated U.S. sanctions and failed to police potentially illicit transactions.

No bank or bank executives have been indicted. Instead, prosecutors have used deferred prosecutions, under which criminal charges against a firm are set aside if it agrees to conditions such as paying fines and changing its behavior.

HSBC's settlement also includes agreements or consent orders with the Manhattan district attorney, the Federal Reserve and three U.S. Treasury Department units: the Office of Foreign Assets Control, the Comptroller of the Currency and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

The settlement is the third time in a decade that HSBC has been penalized for lax controls and ordered by U.S. authorities to improve its monitoring of suspicious transactions. Previous directives by regulators to improve oversight came in 2003 and in 2010.

Last month, HSBC told investors it had set aside $1.5 billion to cover fines or penalties stemming from the inquiry and warned that costs could be significantly higher.

Analyst Jim Antos of Mizuho Securities said the settlement costs were "trivial" in terms of the company's book value.

"But in terms of real cash terms, that's a huge fine to pay," said Antos, who rates HSBC a "buy."

"It has been damaging for the brand, albeit not as bad as it might have been," said Ian Gordon, an analyst at Investec Securities in London.

"Is it absorbable? Yes. Is it significant? Yes. But in the absence of a broader attack on the business structure or individuals, that explains why the market reaction has been relatively muted today and has been since the allegations came out," he added.

HSBC shares closed up 0.56 percent at 644.8 pence in London,

HSBC said it had increased spending on anti-money laundering systems by around nine times between 2009 and 2011, exited business relationships and clawed back bonuses for senior executives. As evidence of its determination to change, it cited the hiring last January of Stuart Levey, a former top U.S. Treasury Department official, as chief legal officer.

Under a five-year agreement with the Justice Department, HSBC agreed to have an independent monitor evaluate its progress in improving its compliance.

It also said that as part of the overhaul of its controls, it has launched a global review of its "Know Your Customer" files, which will cost an estimated $700 million over five years. The files are designed to ensure that banks do not unwittingly act as conduits for criminal funds.

HSBC's settlement comes a day after rival British bank Standard Chartered Plc agreed to a $327 million settlement with U.S. law enforcement agencies for sanctions violations, a pact that follows a $340 million settlement the bank reached with the New York bank regulator in August.

Such settlements have become commonplace. In what had been the largest settlement until this week, ING Bank NV in June agreed to pay $619 million to settle U.S. government allegations that it violated sanctions against countries including Cuba and Iran.

Other banks that have reached settlements over sanctions violations are Switzerland's Credit Suisse Group, Britain's Lloyds Banking Group and Barclays, and ABN Amro Holding NV, a Dutch bank acquired by Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc and a bank consortium in 2007.

In the United States, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co, Wachovia Corp and Citigroup Inc have been cited for anti-money laundering lapses or sanctions violations.

HSBC's failings date to 2003, when the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and New York state regulators ordered it to better monitor suspicious money flows. In 2010, a consent order from the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) ordered HSBC to review suspicious transactions. At the time, the OCC called HSBC's compliance program "ineffective."

In 2008, the federal prosecutor in Wheeling, West Virginia, began investigating allegations that a local doctor used the bank to launder money from Medicare fraud.

Ultimately, the prosecutor's office came to believe the case was "the tip of the iceberg" in terms of suspicious transactions conducted through HSBC, according to documents reviewed by Reuters and reported earlier this year.?
