Hints of consumer confidence emerge, but finances are still shaky for many

For some Americans, clues of confidence in the economy are unmistakable:

? In Davis, Calif., Jennifer Wolfe's family is seeing renewed curiosity in its music-teaching business. The local community is approving bonds and tax increases to support public schools. She's noticing gains in her retirement accounts.

? A movie theater near Eloah James' home in Columbia, Tenn., was a ghost town months ago. Now she says its business is bustling. Nearby storefronts that shuttered during the recession have reopened and are thriving.

? Morris Armstrong, a financial advisor in Danbury, Conn., says clients' interest in divorce and its financial repercussions is (strangely enough) a telltale sign that folks are feeling better economically.

These are just anecdotal nods to an awakening economy, for sure. But these snippets of consumerism do mirror a report released on Tuesday that says consumer confidence has hit a seven-month high. Still, increased morale hasn't seeped into all corners of the country. (For example, Maggie O'Leary of Oklahoma City says hiring still seems weak; her brother can't find full-time automotive work that would've been a cinch in a stronger economy.)

To get a sense of how Americans are feeling about the economy, and if they share the confidence found in Tuesday's survey, Yahoo News asked people across the country to offer their perspectives on their local economies.

Artist feels renewed confidence

For Robin Raven, more confidence in the economy allowed her to return to her chosen career?not just one that pays the bills. It also means not fretting about finding money to pay for health insurance or cover $3,000 worth of needed dental work.

"I was worried about having a freelance career," the Alabama resident writes in a story for Yahoo News. "Now I feel confident enough to soon leave the other job behind and continue with my full-time career as a writer and actress. I feel confident enough that I have founded my own publishing and production company. I feel confident enough buying journals, books, pens, stickers, and other little luxuries that I enjoy as an artist."

The rundown economy and a series of personal setbacks had forced Raven to take a job merely for the security it provided. Now that the country?to her, at least?seems to be rebounding, she says she feels safer.

"Every consumer has her own reasons for regaining the confidence to spend. I know that I feel more confident because of the increasing chances I see opening up for me in the near future. As more people are willing to support the arts, I am grateful for every opportunity I have to do what I love and hopefully give back to others in the process."

Indications of consumers' confidence abound

Eloah James, the Columbia, Tenn., resident, sees a marked difference in her hometown.

"Consumer confidence in the economy is at a recent high?and so is mine," she says. "To me, there are several clear and recent indications that Americans, at least here, are spending more money. And if they are spending more, that means they have more to spend."

For James, the measures of confidence are the local shops. In addition to the movie theater's resurgence, dependent businesses?like the local ice cream shop?are seeing more customers.

"While this is an isolated example, I see similar changes all over town and in the other cities where I spend much of my time. Store parking lots have more cars in them every day; store checkout lines have more people in them."

Not everyone shares the optimism

The economic boom eight years ago in Oklahoma City seems long ago to Maggie O'Leary.

"I don't feel any more confident than I have over the last few years," she writes, pointing out litany of lingering problems: no steady work, lost homes, temp jobs that don't lead to permanent positions, and jobs without benefits. Add in no health insurance, no life insurance and no short-term disability coverage, and O'Leary says it paints a bleak picture.

"People are struggling, and I don't see an end to this," she writes. "My brother worked a temp job for a year at a major automotive manufacturer. Last month he was laid off because the employer was required to bring him on as a permanent employee after a year and give him benefits. One month after he was laid off, they called him to come back to work. As much as he hates to do this, he has a family to feed so he's going to swallow his pride and go back to work."

O'Leary says her brother isn't the only one affected; her friends and other family share the experience. "So while the economy may be improving elsewhere, it's not here."

Economic confidence level related to the divorce rate

It's certainly an odd barometer. But financial advisor Morris Armstrong says divorce may mean renewed economic confidence. In 2009 and 2010, he says, there was a sharp decline in clients interested in divorce's financial implications.

Today, they feel it's in their means: "Now that portfolios have recovered and home prices have stabilized, many people are now readdressing the issue of divorce. I had clients this year remind me that, three years ago, they had spoken with me over the phone about divorce. But the economy prevented them from divorcing and now, they felt that they could afford it."

His business revenue is increasing because of it. But he notes, "It is sad that such a traumatic event may be a gauge of economic confidence, but we have to look for signs wherever we find them."

Consumer confidence is short-lived

Paterson, N.J., resident Dana R. Arevalo is unemployed and facing about $100,000 in student loans after earning her bachelor's degree and an MBA.

She's not confident: "Seven months is not long enough to believe the economy is changing for the better. Unemployment still remains a huge issue. The economy cannot change until individuals feel secure with employment and proven job growth. Families and individuals cannot afford to spend without being gainfully employed. Borrowing will lead one deeper into debt and hardship."

She notes August's unemployment rate of 9.9 percent in New Jersey, almost-$4 gas prices in nearby Pennsylvania and skyrocketing student loan debt.

"Does anyone recall that student-loan debt, talked about repeatedly throughout the year, is higher than credit card debt?" she asks. "We cannot afford to pay for school and leave school owing thousands of dollars with no jobs available in our fields."

"I live day to day," she says.

Six reasons this UN General Assembly is must-see TV

Think the annual September gathering of world leaders at the United Nations is a big snooze? Think again. In the past, it has produced memorable, even explosive, moments: President George W. Bush telling the global assembly in 2002 it risked ?irrelevance? if it didn't join him in confronting Iraq?s Saddam Hussein, or Venezuela?s Hugo Ch?vez, in 2006, likening the same Mr. Bush to the devil, or Libya's late Muammar Qaddafi demanding the UN move to Tripoli so he would not have to cross multiple time zones to attend meetings.

This year, the General Assembly debate convenes early Sept. 25 in a particularly somber mood. The Security Council is stuck in big power paralysis over the Syrian crisis to a degree unseen since the end of the cold war. Here are six key moments to watch for this time, led by a matchup of two presidential candidates from a major Security Council power. Guess which one?

1. Dueling Obama and Romney speeches

OK, so Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won?t have his moment at the UN podium ? at least not this year. But at just about the same time President Obama is addressing the General Assembly Tuesday morning, Mr. Romney will be speaking across Manhattan at the Clinton Global Initiative, former President Bill Clinton?s international development forum.

Mr. Obama?s star status at the UN was tarnished last year when, working through the Security Council, he opposed the Palestinians? bid for recognition. This year, expect Obama to laud Myanmar?s emergence from authoritarian rule and to recognize the ?work in progress? that are the countries of the Arab awakening. He?s likely to remind Syria?s embattled regime that its time is past, but a cautious president wanting no international surprises before November won?t be calling for international intervention in Syria?s civil war. Obama is also likely to remind the world that the window for resolving Iran?s nuclear challenge peacefully is closing.

A question buzzing around diplomatic circles: Will Obama offer a second take of his 2009 Cairo speech and address the frustrations ? showcased in recent anti-American violence ? that threaten to split Muslim countries from the 21st-century world?

2. Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi in the spotlight

Mr. Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated candidate who won Egypt?s first democratic election in June, could provide early clues about how the Islamist leaders who emerged from the Arab Spring intend to interact with the broader world. Morsi was slow to respond to the recent violence that started in Egypt over an American-made video that denigrates the prophet Mohammed. Will Morsi condemn the anti-American and anti-Western violence? And will he pursue the blistering condemnation of Syria?s Bashar al-Assad that he unveiled on a recent visit to Tehran ? and will he thus lay bare the deepening divide between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in the Middle East?

Something else to watch for: what Morsi says about 9/11. The Islamist leader has voiced doubts in the past about Al Qaeda?s role, so some analysts say his visit to New York, the site of the deadliest of the attacks, is a perfect opportunity for him to erase any doubts about his views of that tragic day.

3. A muzzled Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran?

In the past, President Ahmadinejad has seemed to relish his ability to send many delegations fleeing the General Assembly?s green auditorium with his inflammatory statements ? usually directed against Israel, but also targeting the US and the big-power-led Security Council. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatening a military strike against Iran?s nuclear facilities, Mr. Ahmadinejad may opt to throw a few verbal bombs of his own. But some Iran experts, noting that Ahmadinejad is embroiled in a power struggle at home with supreme leader Ali Khamenei, wonder if he might tone down his rhetoric this year.

With Iran?s economy in free fall as a result of UN-approved international sanctions and with the Iranian leadership declaring (and participating in) the Syrian civil war as a battle between regional and international ?domineering powers,? don?t bet on it.

4. Myanmar's return to grace

Myanmar?s president, Thein Sein, will attend the General Assembly, marking the emergence of this Southeast Asian country (formerly known as Burma) from diplomatic isolation amid a significant but incomplete political reformation. Also in New York will be longtime dissident and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, whose stops in Washington included a White House visit with another Nobel laureate, Barack Obama. Ms. Suu Kyi may be the belle of the UN ball, but as an elected member of Myanmar's parliament she may want to avoid showing up President Sein.

5. The Obama-Netanyahu nonmeeting

Obama speaks at the UN Tuesday morning, will address the Clinton Global initiative in the afternoon, and then return to Washington and the campaign. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not arrive in New York until Thursday because of the Yom Kippur holiday. That explains why the two leaders won?t meet in New York, according to the White House.

The real reason seems to lie elsewhere: Mr. Netanyahu had circulated his intention to press Obama to commit to setting ?red lines? for Iran?s nuclear program that, once crossed by Tehran, would trigger US military action. But Obama, who wants to give diplomacy more time and who believes that setting automatic triggers on Iran at this point would be counterproductive, wanted to avoid being painted into a corner by the Israeli leader. Netanyahu is expected to meet with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton instead, so watch for signs of any tension.

6. Palestinian statehood redux

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last year attempted an end run around the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process by using the UN gathering to submit a formal petition for statehood to the Security Council. The move went nowhere, but not before infuriating the US (see ?painting into a corner? in previous item) for forcing Obama to take the UN stage to side with Israel and publicly state US opposition to something he had supported: Palestinian statehood.

This year the Palestinians are lowering their sights. They are expected to announce their intention to win UN ?observer state? status through the General Assembly by the end of the year.

Observer status ? it?s what the Vatican has at the UN ? does not confer voting rights, but it would endow the Palestinians with enhanced legal rights, such as the ability to pursue Israel in international courts. The US and Israel oppose the ?observer state? initiative, saying it would doom the peace process. But winning it requires only a majority vote from the 193-member General Assembly, which is largely pro-Palestinian. With some Palestinian leaders proclaiming that ?observer state? status would recognize Palestine as a ?country under occupation,? the words Mr. Abbas chooses to explain the initiative could turn out to be the assembly?s most explosive.

Zoloft Birth Defect Lawsuit | ArticlePDQ.com

Choices about how to treat depression in pregnant women are increasingly complex. Patients and physicians ought to carefully think about and go over together the prospective rewards and risks of remedy with antidepressants throughout pregnancy. Two research give crucial details to be deemed in creating such decisions. The scientific studies integrated girls who had been treated with antidepressant drugs that act as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or, in a few cases, other antidepressants. SSRI, such as Zoloft, are the most typically utilised drugs to treat depression in the U.S.

The 1st study illustrated the possible danger of relapsed depression right after stopping antidepressant medication for the duration of pregnancy. The authors followed pregnant women who in the past had main depression. In the course of their pregnancy, some of these females had been not feeling depressed and stopped taking their antidepressant medicines. Other individuals stayed on their antidepressant medicines whilst pregnant. The females who stopped their medicine had been five instances a lot more likely to have a relapse of depression during their pregnancy than were the women who continued to take their antidepressant medicine while pregnant. This study, by Lee Cohen and other authors, was published February 1, 2006 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

A second study suggested there may be further, though rare, dangers of SSRI medicines for the duration of pregnancy. This study focused on newborn babies with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), which is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon following birth of the newborn. Babies with PPHN have high pressure in their lung blood vessels and are not able to get sufficient oxygen into their bloodstream. About 1 to two babies per 1000 babies born in the U.S. create PPHN shortly following birth, and often they need intensive medical care. In this study PPHN was six occasions more common in babies whose mothers took an SSRI antidepressant following the 20th week of the pregnancy compared to babies whose mothers did not take an antidepressant. The study was too tiny to compare the risk in 1 drug compared to another, and this threat has not so far been investigated by other researchers. The study, by Christina Chambers and others, was published on February 9, 2006 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The locating of PPHN in babies of mothers who employed a SSRI antidepressant in the second half of pregnancy adds to concerns coming from earlier reports that infants of mothers taking SSRIs late in pregnancy may knowledge difficulties such as irritability, difficulty feeding and in really rare cases, difficulty breathing. In addition, the labeling for paroxetine (Paxil) was recently changed to add info about findings in an epidemiology study suggesting that exposure to the drug in the 1st trimester of pregnancy may possibly be related with an improved danger of cardiac birth defects.

The uncommon possible threat to the newborn of PPHN has not been confirmed by additional research. Uncertainty about these rare events and their prospective impact on the newborn, along with the possible threat to the mother of recurring depression if she stops her antidepressant medicines during pregnancy, makes choices about the remedy of depression in pregnant ladies specifically difficult for wellness care pros and patients.

Ladies who are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant must not quit any antidepressant without having initial consulting their physician. The decision to continue medication or not should be made only soon after there has been careful consideration of the potential advantages and dangers of the medication for each and every individual pregnant patient. If the choice is created to stop treatment with SSRIs just before or throughout pregnancy, this ought to be accomplished with a healthcare expert, according to the prescribing info for the drug, and patients must be observed closely in case their depression comes back.

The FDA is searching for extra data about the possible risk of PPHN in newborn babies of mothers who took SSRI antidepressants in pregnancy. The FDA asked the sponsors of all SSRIs to adjust prescribing details to describe the potential danger for PPHN.

England v India World T20 report

ENGLAND?S enduring nightmare returned to haunt them yesterday.

They were twisted and tormented inside a giant spinners? web.

The optimism of the early stages of the World Twenty20 evaporated during a crushing 90-run defeat by India.

OK, the result was largely academic as both teams had already made the second phase, known as the Super Eights.

But the way England?s batsmen looked hopelessly bereft of confidence and technical proficiency when facing India?s spinners was alarming.

They were not just dismissed, they were utterly humiliated. And India?s best slow man, Ravi Ashwin, was not even playing as captain MS Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher omitted four first-choice players.

England were seen off for just 80 in 14.4 overs.

It was their lowest total in Twenty20 and their worst margin of defeat.

Captain Stuart Broad attempted to put on a brave face.

He said: ?I?m pleased it happened now and not in a match that would have knocked us out.

CRASH ... Eoin Morgan is skittled by Harbhajan Singh

CRASH ... Eoin Morgan is skittled by Harbhajan Singh

?We thought India?s total of 170 was gettable but our error was losing early wickets. Spinners always enjoy bowling to new batsmen.

?For the early batsmen, hitting straight would have been a better option rather than across the line. We made it easy but we?ll learn from our mistakes.

?It?s frustrating that some days we play spin nicely and others everyone seems to play it badly.?

TOP TWIRLING ... Harbhajan Singh

TOP TWIRLING ... Harbhajan Singh

Eoin Morgan, Jonny Bairstow, Craig Kieswetter, Tim Bresnan, Jos Buttler and Graeme Swann were all bamboozled by the Indian twirly men.

Harbhajan Singh took 4-12 in his first international match for a year and little leggie Piyesh Chawla returned 2-13.

England?s first Super Eights encounter is against West Indies or Ireland on Thursday.

(AP) ? Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan warned Monday that more Americans could be put at risk overseas by the Obama's administration plan to halt production of tanks in Ohio for several years.

The White House has proposed suspending production at the nation's only tank manufacturing plant because the Pentagon says it will soon have enough tanks. Some members of Congress are attempting to restore funding for the tanks and other military weapons in a defense spending bill, a move the White House has threatened to veto.

About 800 workers refurbish the Abrams tanks in Lima, about 80 miles south of Toledo. Republicans in the state have been highly critical of plans affecting the plant and say they won't save the government money.

General Dynamics Corp.'s land systems unit, which operates the government-owned plant, estimates that the cost of shutting down the plant and then restarting it would be $1.6 billion while keeping it open with minimal production over four years would cost $1.4 billion. The Army puts the price of pausing production much lower ? around $400 million.

"We need peace through strength," Ryan told supporters during a rally in Lima. "We need a strong military."

Blind people develop accurate mental map by playing 'video' game

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Researchers have developed a new "video" game for blind people that can help them learn about a new space using only audio cues, as reported Sept. 19 in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

The system, developed by a team led by Lotfi Merabet of Harvard Medical School and Jaime S?nchez of the University of Chile, is called the Audiobased Environment Simulator and uses only audio-based cues to allow blind users to learn about the layout of a previously unfamiliar building.

After playing the game, participants were better able to navigate a real-world version of the space explored in the virtual reality environment, confirming that the spatial information learned in the game was accurate and transferrable.

"Learning through such interactive games represents an innovative and motivating way to improve crucial skills that allow blind individuals to remain functionally independent," says Merabet.

The way to Flourish in Company Interviews -- Three Will need to ...

There are numerous things to consider when performing company selection interviews these days. Some people are incredibly experienced at carrying out selection interviews. They are going to generally not disregard some of the much more clear issues. School graduate students getting into the workforce will be those using the greatest disadvantages. What you need to do is actually hit the tarmac operating, although you may do not know very much. The level of experience is a vital element. Focus on just what the boss might be searching for. You will find that many businesses will tell you if it's an entry-level or even low experience-based place. Now let's consider these 3 company interview techniques you need to know.

Within a business meeting, you will end up asked numerous questions. The best way to get ready is usually to be ready for whatever could cross your path. Given that competition is intense nowadays, you need to go above and beyond inside your products. Before the meeting, ensure that you have of one's details layered up so that you understand what to state when questions are usually asked. Notify the way your expertise may benefit the potential employer, specifically if you involve some in this area. Whatever the placement is actually, take the work description, and try to look in a way that allows you to look like the most effective individual for the job. This can be the easiest way for you to be correctly ready for any questions which come your path. In case you are using a poor day, don't let that show in the interview! You should be optimistic as well as positive the whole moment. Do not come throughout since fake as well as insincere, so you simply need to end up being calm. Many people, such as organisations, have to be about optimistic employees, not really kinds that'll be problems. Awareness of your own self is an absolute must. Individuals can discover if you're unfavorable or otherwise. An individual may just achieve this much, as well as basic suggestions are only able to get you to date. Although you may failed to such as your earlier company, that's really not some thing you want to bring up in an interview. The interview must not fully handle your case like a never ending whiner -- make sure that a person look in the optimistic way.

One of the most usually questioned issue regarding government financing regarding courses is the place the newbie to online enterprise can easily understand the greatest rewards. We realize of people who are already working on the internet for several years, however they haven't utilized all the strategies that are available; so that it just depends upon your position. Just like all else whatever it's, a solid functioning bottom comprising principles is essential. What you ought to go period you study a data write-up regarding enterprise techniques is immediately observe how it may fit with everything you carry out. We have been continually looking for little things that may be constructed upon or perhaps revised in a way that provides for us some control. Pay out total attention to exactly what is being mentioned through the job interview. Complex circumstances tend to be offered as queries. This is the way the business are able to see how well you will manage possible scenarios within your place. Simply by communicating with them like this, they are able to see how you will manage specific situations that may arise within your place. You have to be up for the obstacle, and be able to manage all your thoughts along with clearness through the job interview. The easiest way to achieve this is always to breakdown the potential details as well as queries that may arise before you get right now there. You shouldn't say that you do not be aware of solution, or even stroll in any way. I suggest you be honest. Let them know without a solution if that is the sole remedy.

In most cases, business job interviews are performed in the same way. This will make newcomers less scared and more urged. Generally, you should be careful any time getting questioned through human resource personnel. Otherwise, it is all totally alright. Each person will be searching for something more important through the job interview, and also you have to display an impressive selection inside your features. What you would should do is actually end up being up to speed in every locations apart from basically what the career specifications are.

Plan Your Holiday Gaming Season - Game Informer

If you?re looking for an arbitrary beginning to this year?s holiday gaming season, you might as well label today?s release of Borderlands 2 as the starting gate. And wow, we?ve got a lot of gaming ahead.?

So break out your smart phone/email calendar/pocket planner/napkin, and let?s figure out how you?re going to fit all this in.?

We?re going to make a lot of assumptions in the following, including about how much gaming you do, and how long it will take to play games that we haven?t played ourselves yet. We?ve based our time estimates on a highly scientific structure called guessing, and we?re assuming you?ve got about three hours a day (averaging weekdays and weekends together) to devote to play. If you know you spend a lot more or less than that, adjust your schedule accordingly.

Already Available

The holiday pre-season got going early this year, and several big games are already out. If you?ve been on summer holiday on Majorca, then make sure you didn?t miss anything you love before you dive into later releases.?

Darksiders II

This one?s a biggie, and it?s Zelda-style dungeons are likely to take you a long while to conquer. If you haven?t started yet, set aside a good two weeks on your calendar for this one to allow for a complete playthrough. If you?re planning on doing New Game Plus, the Crucible, and all the other bonus features of the game, add a few extra days.?

Sleeping Dogs

This open world crime game raised more than a few eyebrows when it released in August, offering up a lot of fun for your money. You?ll need at least a week (20+ hours) of devoted playing if you still want to squeeze the title in before things get even more busy, and even that?s going to be pushing it.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

Fall of Cybertron has a robust single-player campaign, but it?s nothing you can?t handle in a few days. You?re probably going to mess around with secrets, upgrades, and additional difficulty settings a little bit, so let?s say four or five full days for single-player. If you?ve got friends also playing, talk with them about a few nights where you can play cooperative Escalation and competitive modes together; if you love the game?s multiplayer features, you can always budget in some extra time.?

Guild Wars 2

If you?re an MMO enthusiast, it?d be a shame to miss out on this landmark release in the genre. On the bright side, there?s no subscription fee, so you can install the game and come back to it intermittently in the coming months. If you?re doing it that way, consider blocking off a couple nights each week that you?re going to devote to Tyria. That said, if you?re really committed, you may as well throw out your calendar and forget everything else on this list. This one could easily keep you busy until New Years.?

Video shows Libyans helping rescue US ambassador after attack

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - An amateur video appears to show Libyans trying to rescue U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens from a room filled with smoke at the U.S. mission where he was found unconscious after last week's attack by a mob protesting against a film that denigrates the Prophet Mohammad.

The video, which appeared on the internet and a copy of which was obtained by Reuters in Benghazi, confirms reports that suggested the U.S. envoy died of asphyxiation after the building caught fire.

The footage also sheds new light on the circumstances of the ambassador's death, apparently showing for the first time that some of the people who forced their way into the U.S. compound later tried to rescue Stevens after they found him lying alone, with no security detail, in one of the rooms in the building.

The video shows a group of young men who had earlier stormed the compound telling other protesters by the light of torches and mobile phones that they had found someone who appeared to be a foreigner lying on the floor.

"There is someone inside ... He is a foreigner, he is a foreigner. Take him out," said one man, shouting for help.

"Bring him out, man! Bring him out," another said.

"The man is alive. Bring him out, man. Bring him out," said a third.

"Alive, Alive! God is Greatest," the crowd cried. Someone called for a car.

"Make space, is there someone who is a medic around? Anyone who can get a car quickly?" another man can be heard saying.

Stevens and three other embassy staff died when gunmen attacked the U.S. consulate and a safe house in the eastern Libyan city on Tuesday night. The attackers were part of a crowd blaming America for a film they said insulted the Prophet Mohammad.

Security personnel were separated from Stevens during the attack, U.S. officials said, in the chaos of smoke and gunfire that ensued.

The identity and motive of the attackers remain unclear. Activists who took part in the protest said the motive was rage at the video produced in California and which describes the Prophet as a homosexual and womanizer.

Some Libyan officials blamed the attack on radical Islamist groups linked to al Qaeda, such as regional affiliate Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and Ansar al-Sharia. Both groups back the introduction of Islamic Sharia law rather than democracy.

The footage shows Stevens lying on the floor in a smoke-filled room after protesters had stormed the compound and set fire to its buildings.

Minutes later he was pulled out of the room through a window, and then placed on the courtyard's stone tile floor. A young man is seen putting his hand on his neck to check if he was breathing.

A protester wearing a white T-shirt who had carried Stevens out of the room was hugged by a fellow protestor in a traditional expression of gratitude.

Seconds after the protesters found Stevens was alive, a young man in the background can be heard shouting: "Take him to my car, bring him to my car."

A doctor on duty in the emergency room at the Benghazi Medical Centre that night has said local civilians brought in the ambassador at around 1 a.m. While the doctor performed CPR for 45 minutes, Stevens died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation. His body was later returned to U.S. custody.

"ON HIS OWN"

Fahd Al-Bakoush, a young activist who took the video, said he saw the ambassador "moving his lips and his eyes moving and his body darkened by smoke."

Bakoush told Reuters the storming of the embassy happened shortly after several armed Libyan guards at the entrance refused protesters' demands to enter the compound and take down the U.S. flag.

He said the violence began after shots fired from the compound to scare demonstrators provoked angry protesters outside, prompting hardline elements within the protesters to throw home made grenades and fire RPGs.

Shortly afterwards, nearly 100 mainly Islamist protesters broke into the large compound with little resistance from embassy security. The intruders were then free to rampage through the large complex in the affluent Al-Hawari neighborhood.

Bakoush said he only realized the next day that it was the ambassador who had been found and was surprised that he was left on his own in the villa with none of his aides.

"I did not expect the ambassador to be on his own and I had thought the ambassador had been the first to escape," he said.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said in a statement that Tuesday's assault was partly motivated by the death of Abu Yahya al-Libi, a Libyan al Qaeda leader in Pakistan killed in a U.S. drone strike.

A spokesman for President Barack Obama said last week that officials had no evidence the attack was pre-planned, an assertion which has added to confusion over the incident. Immediately after the attack, U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, were widely quoted as saying they believed the attack was well-planned and organized.

Flu antibody?s ?one-handed grab? may boost effort toward universal vaccine, new therapies

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Scientists from The Scripps Research Institute and Sea Lane Biotechnologies have solved the co-crystal structure of a human antibody that can neutralize influenza viruses in a unique way. The antibody recognizes the crucial structure that flu viruses use to attach to host cells, even though previously this structure had been thought too small for an antibody to grab effectively. The immune protein manages to hit this precise spot by using just a small part of its target-grabbing apparatus. In so doing, it can neutralize a broad range of dangerous flu viruses.

"This highly focused binding to the receptor binding site using only a single loop on the antibody has never been seen before, and it's really fascinating; it gives us some good ideas about designs for vaccines and therapies," said Ian A. Wilson, the Hansen Professor of Structural Biology at Scripps Research. Wilson was senior investigator of the study along with Ramesh R. Bhatt of Sea Lane Biotechnologies. The report appears online ahead of print on September 16, 2012, in the journal Nature.

The Power of Large Numbers

Sea Lane Biotechnologies, advised by Richard Lerner, the Lita Annenberg Hazen Professor of Immunochemistry at Scripps Research, began by collecting bone marrow from patients who had been exposed to certain key strains of flu. Because the bone marrow is a "fossil record" of all the antibodies a person has ever made, those at Sea Lane felt confident that the antibodies they were looking for would be there. Sea Lane's efforts even went as far as to include advertised appeals on Craigslist for individuals who had certain strains of the flu. Using the internationally and locally collected bone marrow, Sea Lane generated a "comprehensive flu library" of billions of antibodies.

Sea Lane Biotechnologies scientists, led by Bhatt, isolated the unusual new antibody, which they dubbed C05, by screening this enormous library for antibodies that could bind to proteins from a variety of influenza A viruses -- the most dangerous family of flu viruses.

C05 also protected cells in the lab dish from infection by these viruses. In mice, relatively low doses of C05 prevented infections despite influenza A exposures that would have been lethal. The antibody worked as a therapy, too, rescuing 100 percent of mice when administered up to three days after a flu infection had begun.

An Unusual Grip for a Tricky Target

Further tests revealed a curious property of C05. Almost uniquely among broadly neutralizing antibodies against influenza A, it specifically recognizes and blocks the part of the flu virus that mediates viral attachment to host cells. Known as the "receptor binding site" (RBS), this viral site is located on the heads of viral hemagglutinins, spiky structures of sugar and protein that coat the viral envelope.

The RBS is a key functional site on flu viruses and is relatively exposed to the immune system compared to other viral regions. It would be an ideal target for antibodies, except that it is quite small compared to an antibody's usual grip area.

An antibody binds targets using two arm-like structures, each of which has six protein fingers or loops. To get a good grip on the flu RBS with some or all these loops, a typical antibody has to grab not only the RBS, but also some of the surrounding structures in the head, which vary from one flu strain to another. Thus, an antibody that does get a firm grip on this region for one flu strain generally will lose that grip once the strain mutates. "This is why universal flu vaccine strategies in recent years have been focused more on the hemagglutinin stem than on the head," noted Damian C. Ekiert, formerly of Wilson's laboratory at Scripps Research and now of University of California, San Francisco. Ekiert was first author of the paper with Arun K. Kashyap of Sea Lane Biotechnologies.

Wilson's laboratory specializes in the use of X-ray crystallography and other techniques to determine precisely where and how such antibodies bind to their viral targets. Using these methods, his team found that C05 effectively avoids grabbing the hypervariable regions around the flu RBS. Instead it uses a single elongated protein loop to reach in and make a "one-handed" -- or "one-fingered" -- grab of the RBS itself. The antibody apparently works best when two of these active loops, one on each arm, grab two viral RBSs on separate hemagglutinins. "It looks like these antibodies need to cross-link two hemagglutinins to have maximum effect," said Wilson.

Potentially Useful

The RBS has such an important function that it does not change much from strain to strain -- and thus C05 can neutralize a broad range of dangerous influenza A viruses, including H1, H2, H3, and H9 subtypes.

The fact that C05 can make such a precision grab suggests that it and perhaps even more potent antibodies could contribute to antibody-based therapies for severe influenza infections. A universal flu vaccine also might be significantly more effective if it could be designed to elicit such antibodies in people.

"If we can figure out how to induce this sort of antibody in a vaccine, we would have something that's very useful," said Lawrence Horowitz, CEO of Sea Lane Biotechnologies.

In addition to Wilson, Bhatt, Ekiert, Kashyap, and Horowitz, authors of the paper, "Neutralization of Influenza A viruses by insertion of a single antibody loop into the receptor binding site," included Michael A. Dillon, Ryann E. O'Neil, Aleksandr M. Faynboym, and Michael Horowitz of Sea Lane; John Steele and Peter Palese of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Adam Rubrum and Richard Webby of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital of Memphis, Tennessee; and Gira Bhabha, Reza Khayat, Jeong Hyun Lee, and Andrew B. Ward of Scripps Research.

The study was funded in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health (P01 AI058113 and GM080209) and the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at Scripps Research.

(AP) ? Concert giant AEG Live is seeking book drafts and manuscripts by Jermaine Jackson that it claims may reveal details about his superstar brother that will help its defense in a lawsuit filed by the singers' mother.

AEG is seeking drafts and manuscripts of Jackson's recent book, "You Are Not Alone," as well as an unpublished memoir it claims may focus on Michael Jackson's alleged drug abuse.

Jermaine Jackson's attorneys are fighting the request, calling them overly broad and in violation of the First Amendment, according to court filings. Turning over the writings also would violate the privacy of Michael Jackson's three children and other family members and constitute a "fishing expedition," according to documents filed Monday.

AEG's attorneys contend the writings are important to its defense in a case filed by the singers' mother claiming the concert promoter failed to properly supervise Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Michael Jackson's June 2009 death.

Their efforts seek drafts of a book described as "Legacy: Surviving the Best and the Worst," which was reportedly in the works several years before the pop superstar's death. AEG claims drafts of the work would show issues "of immense relevance to this case, including Michael Jackson's rumored long-term abuse of prescription medication."

AEG's attorney Marvin Putnam wrote in an email that the company was seeking the documents because, during his book tour, Jermaine Jackson publicly touted the "details of his brother's life and death." Putnam also wrote that Jermaine Jackson claimed he was the "only person qualified to deliver the real Michael."

The writings are not covered by protections afforded to investigative journalists since they are memoirs, AEG wrote in its motion to get a judge to order the release of the materials. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 28.

Jermaine Jackson's lawyer Kevin Boyle, who also represents his mother in the lawsuit against AEG, was not immediately available for comment.

AEG had promoted Michael Jackson's comeback shows, titled "This Is It," which were canceled after his unexpected death due to an overdose of a hospital anesthetic the singing had been given to help him sleep.

The company also is seeking to depose Jermaine Jackson. And it obtained a judge's order Wednesday requiring Jackson's longtime friend and dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein to appear for a deposition next month.

Katherine Jackson sued AEG in September 2010, and the case is scheduled for trial in April 2013.

The company also is involved in a separate lawsuit filed by Lloyd's of London over Michael Jackson's life insurance policy. Putnam said the company has informed Lloyd's that it has recouped its losses and is no longer pursuing the claim. Any proceeds should be paid to a company that benefits Michael Jackson's estate, he said.

AEG's formal withdrawal of the claim is expected soon, as well as its dismissal from the case filed by the insurer.
