AT&T urging customers to upgrade to 3G, possibly killing off 2G
In a move that is sure to surprise no one, it appears AT&T is getting ready to send its trusty 2G GSM network riding off into the sunset. MarketWatch is reporting that some Ma Bell customers have received letters, urging them to upgrade to a 3G or (gasp) 4G device and warning that service may degrade in some areas as spectrum is repurposed. While the letter stops short of saying the 2G network is being shut down, it seems the writing is on the wall. With the collapse of the T-Mobile acquisition and Verizon's sizable lead in the race to acquire spectrum, AT&T is left with little choice but to use its GSM channels for HSPA+ and LTE service. So far the notices have only gone out to customers in the New York metro area, but it seems safe to assume other locales will follow. Residents worry new fire maps mean higher insurance rates - News ...
Homeowners from Villa Park to Mission Viejo are speaking out at city meetings, voicing frustration and concern over updated fire hazard maps they say will send property values plummeting and insurance rates skyrocketing.
State law requires fire officials to periodically update fire hazard maps using the latest data, science and technology. The same law mandates city officials adopt the updated maps, and few cities have seen more rancor over matter than Mission Viejo, where officials on Monday will discuss the issue for the third time.

More than 80 Mission Viejo residents packed a room at the Civic Center last week to hear from city and fire officials why they weren't notified sooner about the maps, and to question the credibility of the maps.
Resident Joel Sugg spoke at a public hearing on the maps in early February. Sugg lives at the north end of Mission Viejo in Painted Trails, a community newly added to very high fire hazard severity zone map.
"I think that there's going to be a potential negative impact on homeowners' policies present and future," said Sugg, who contacted his insurance company about the issue. "They said it wouldn't definitely raise the fees immediately, but they have the right to review it and potentially raise them."
Sugg also echoed others' concerns that insurance companies would pull out of the area.
"It's definitely going to limit the competition because right now, where my home is situated, it's on the sort of top side of the toll road," he said. "We have vegetation at the back slope area. There's a lot of homeowners policy writers that will not write because we are on the slope. My question is, how many additional homeowners insurers will not write because we are going to be in a very high fire hazard (zone)."
FIRE PREVENTION
Fire protection is the responsibility of either state, local or federal authorities. Mapping very high fire hazard zones allows authorities and residents to understand the risks associated with those zones, identify measures to deal with those risks, and require the measures be taken.
State responsibility areas, which include unincorporated Orange County, were mapped in 1985 and updated in 2007.
Local responsibility areas, which include incorporated cities, were mapped in the mid-90s following the 1991 Oakland Hills fire, which destroyed 2,500 homes and caused more than $2 billion in damage. Those maps have not been updated until now.
Since 2007, the state has been working with the Orange County Fire Authority, its contract cities and city fire departments to update the maps using new data about fire history and ember movement, and new science and technology.
The maps identify areas where strict state building codes implemented in 2008 should be applied for rebuilt or new structures, and state law requires cities to adopt the maps so those codes will apply. Room additions and remodels would not be affected.
EFFECTS ON HOMEOWNERS
Though city, county and state officials have been discussing the maps for several years, ensuring local knowledge is being considered, the public has been left out of the process, infuriating homeowners who wanted an opportunity to have their developments excluded because they fear what the designation will mean for insurance rates and property values.
OCFA Fire Marshal Laura Blaul took the blame for the lack of notification, saying the fire agency was more focused on getting the maps finalized so they could be used as a tool for educating residents about hazards and what they can do about them.
The maps have been in place in unincorporated areas such as Ladera Ranch and Coto de Caza since 2008, she said, and the department has not received feedback about insurance or property values issues.
OCFA researched the insurance issue, surveying five counties where the maps have been adopted, and speaking to representatives from the state Department of Insurance, the California FAIR Plan Association, which issues insurance to those unable to get it from typical insurers, and the Insurance Services Office, which provides data and underwriting services to insurance companies.
No evidence was found to indicate insurance premiums were affected or that insurance companies used the maps in the underwriting process.
However, RiskMeter Online, a Boston-based company that provides data reports to major insurance companies, does make California fire hazard severity zone maps available to underwriters and insurance agents.
Steve Inlow is an agent with Harbor West Insurance in Mission Viejo. Harbor West, in business for 25 years, represents about 20 insurance companies and issues policies for clients from Irvine to San Clemente. The bulk of homeowners policies are from Travelers, Mercury and First American Specialty insurance companies.
Inlow uses RiskMeter regularly. He said of the more than 20 data layers available to select when running a RiskMeter report, fire hazard severity zones was not among them. Inlow also said Harbor West has not received any nonrenewals for fire hazard in Ladera Ranch or Coto de Caza.
CONCERNS REMAIN
Residents also have questioned the accuracy of the fire hazard maps because demarcation lines don't always make sense, Blaul said. Lines are drawn through neighborhoods such that one home on a street is in the zone while a home next door is not.
In addition, residents have taken issue with the criteria used to create the zones, noting hazards are considered, but not mitigations such as nearby lakes and reservoirs or stricter building standards used on their homes.
Blaul will be at Monday's meeting in Mission Viejo to discuss the city's options. One possibility, she said, is to reject the map but designate areas the state says are very high fire hazard zones as special fire protection areas or something similar.
Stricter construction standards and a vegetation management plan would be required in those areas.
"These people are at risk whether they adopt the maps or not," she said. "They need to understand that, and they need to know there are things they can do to increase the survivability of their homes."

Complain all you want about the Internet. Nothing tops direct mail when it comes to offending people. Just ask David and Lisa Barron, a couple cited in a recent piece on WMC TV.
The Barrons? special-needs daughter Madison Kate died in 1999 at age four. But the family still receives mailings addressed to her, and ?it?s always just on the right time schedule as far as what she would have been doing at that time in her life,? Lisa Barron told WMC-TV.
That?s as insensitive as it gets. The only comparable outrage occurred when a tobacco company mailed a late union leader ?years ago. The man had done anti-smoking commercials before dying of lung cancer.
How do these things happen? In the Barrons? case, it started when the family signed up for a baby food promotion. The firm ?stored Madison?s information and tracked it in order to send age-appropriate offers and sales pitches to the Barron home,? WMC reported.
Predictably, one observer blamed this on greed. ?We?re talking about a trillion dollar a year business,? this expert said. ?Money is what it?s all about.?
But let?s get real. There?s no profit in mailing dead people. And it can be easily avoided: As part of routine list hygiene, well-run firms scrub their lists against deceased files made up of death records, the Social Security Death Index and credit sources.
Sure, names can fall through the cracks. Most letters to children are addressed to their parents (they should be, anyway); if a child dies, that might not be flagged. And a toddler is unlikely to have a credit or Social Security imprint.
Still, a proper scrub would have prevented what happened to the Barrons. And that begs the larger question: Why did it take 13 years for the family to start getting off these lists? Were they given a chance to opt out?
That said, it doesn?t happen often. And this problem should fade away as companies move online. Someone who priced a product milliseconds ago and is now receiving a real-time display ad is obviously still living. And this kind of intent data is anonymous?there?s no personally identifiable information.

'Avengers' Teaser: Earth's All-Time Mightiest Trailer?

Help me out here, guys: Am I really the only one out there who thinks the new "Marvel's The Avengers" trailer is the best superhero trailer of the past year?
Sure, we've had excellent spots for "Dark Knight Rises" and "Amazing Spider-Man" in recent months, but did either of those feature the Incredible Hulk running full-sprint toward the sky to catch a battered and broken Iron Man? No, they didn't — yet somehow, I'm the only person on Talk Nerdy who seems really, truly psyched for everything "Avengers" has to offer.
As you'll see in this week's episode of Talk Nerdy below, my friends and co-hosts Eric Ditzian and Brian Phares are nowhere near as jazzed about "The Avengers" as I am. In fact, they're quite worried about the Marvel movie. I share some of their concerns, sure, but more than anything, I'm seriously bummed that their levels of excitement are so low after watching the newest trailer for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Their reactions got me thinking: Am I losing my mind? Am I alone in my "Avengers" fan fever dream? I reached out to several colleagues and pals in the film and comic book space to get their opinions on the new trailer, and thankfully for my mental health, it seems I'm not alone in my copious praise.
"I just have one word to describe the new trailer: BIG!" MTV Geek editor Valerie Gallaher said. "To see the core Avengers characters together and in action on such a colossal playing field is just a dream come true. And Hulk looks great and believable, which is a real relief for me."
"The new footage showcasing Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man was invincible; the glimpse of Stark Tower, exquisite; and the promise of more Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, incredible. We even got a quick look at Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill," offered Steve Sunu with Comic Book Resources. "While the trailer didn't really defy any expectations for Earth's Mightiest Movie, it certainly met them — and piqued our interest as to why the Avengers are fighting Decepticons to the soundtrack of 'Inception.' "
Of course, my buddy Steve is referring to the giant monster/ spaceship seen at the end of the trailer. Popular theories are pointing to the creature being a Marvel Studios variation on Fin Fang Foom, the massive, shape-shifting space dragon from comic book lore. Jordan Hoffman offered some opinions on the mystery antagonist in his latest Planet Fanboy column for NextMovie, and also added his assessment of the "Avengers" trailer.
"Will there be a better movie than 'Marvel's The Avengers' this summer? Maybe ... probably," he said. "I mean, 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Prometheus' are looking outrageous. Will there be a trailer that draws more breath from the daydreams of comic-reading fanboys? I strongly doubt it."
Exactly my point. "Avengers" might not be the best geek movie coming out in 2012, but I'm hard pressed to identify a trailer with more geekgasm-worthy material. As Comics Alliance's senior editor Caleb Goellner put it: "The new 'Avengers' trailer was essentially what every fan has been waiting for since Nick Fury broke into Tony Stark's pad after the 'Iron Man' credits. Previous promotions did well with broadcasting the film's human drama, but admittedly had me worried about its special effects budget. The new trailer slayed my concerns. The Hulk didn't just catch Iron Man in this thing; the dude caught my heart."
